Is Gamecock Nation Ready To Make Good On Their Promise?

Is Gamecock Nation ready to make good on their promise?

We shall soon see. Saturday afternoon most people watched the Panthers capture a playoff win albeit a losing record. As shocking as that feat might have been even more shocking was the statement made by the Gamecock MBB team as the knocked off # 9 Iowa St. Not everyone was ready to hear it, I texted one friend and alum about the gritty contest and he simply replied “I’m watching football”. Ready or not, it’s finally time to rock Colonial Life Arena, this team deserves your support and I believe they will make the NCAA tournament.

Last season we were awful, and despite the youth I came into this season officially tired of giving Frank Martin time. I watched the Charleston Classic hoping to see enough progress to believe an NIT birth could be obtainable. Our performance was horrible and likely enough to make many Gamecock fans look forward to baseball season. While tailgating for the South Alabama game I asked, “Is it ok to be tired of Frank Martin yet?” Most people felt he had to get us into the 2016 NCAA tournament if he wanted to avoid the hot seat. I was more frustrated than that, I wanted a winning record and an NIT birth at minimum this year. I think Frank is going to deliver far more than that this season. I can’t explain what happened after the Charleston Classic but they stopped stepping on rakes, and started playing efficient basketball in every segment of the game.

Thornwell is awesome. He has been rated as a top 30 NBA prospect, and he looked like it three times late Saturday when we needed to make plays. I have waited for Carolina to put a difference maker on an NBA team forever. That has not happened since Alex English, and Thornwell has a great shot to give me a reason to watch the NBA.

This team is deeper than Thornwell; it is not like the one man Devan Downey teams. All of a sudden Notice is finishing plays; he is fun to watch and has become a difference maker. How many seasons have passed since we had a big man that could play? You have to go back to Carlos Powell’s senior season to find it. I am really proud of the progress Kacinas and Chatkevicius have made. We will be man handled inside no more! These guys are rebounding, blocking shots and taking ownership of the paint. They both fouled out against Iowa St, and I am fine with that. Brooklyn brawlers they were, and that is the type of physical play we will need moving forward. My favorite thing about this team is they are getting quality minutes from the bench. We’ve got players, a great coach, a winning streak, and UF on Wednesday night. Let’s show up and be more hostile than Frank Martin’s best cold stare. After all, you’re all out there. Maybe you were at bar-none or The Flying saucer, but you remember stating “Man, if we had a winning basketball program we would fill Colonial Life Arena. It would be special, one of the most difficult places to play in the SEC! If only Odom, Horn, Martin Could deliver!” As they say, be there.
